Get Outside

May is Get Outside Month.

The Outdoor Education Department of the TDSB has created numeracy based lessons to be taught in an outdoor environment.  Each school day of May has a different lesson, that is quickly adapted to any grade level.

Follow the link to the calendar of lessons.  Click on the lesson, and have a great day of learning with your students outside.

Bruce Daley Environmental Award Nominations

This year, the Bruce Daley Environmental Award was given to Jane Wadden, currently the Vice-Principal at Northlea ES.  Jane was the Site Supervisor of Hillside for many years and worked diligently to ensure that the programs available at Hillside were exemplary.  In addition she worked with community partners, supporting the Rouge National Park and offering her expertise regarding education and environmental awareness.

As well, Kris Pedlar of Bellemere ES and Natasha Cordoso of William G Davis were given recognition for contributions to their respective schools in the areas of environmentalism and eco-schools.

Thanks to everyone for ensuring that students have opportunities to learn about their actions and their impact on our environment.

Hillside’s outdoor classroom is located in the Rouge Park, Canada’s largest urban park, over 47 km2 of natural landscapes waiting to dazzle you with its spectacular forests, meadows, ponds and wetlands.

Students visiting Hillside are introduced a wide array of programs with a focus on an aspect of The Ontario Curriculum. Direct, hands-on outdoor experiences deepen connections to nature and enhance children’s health and well-being.

Our programs provide education about the environment, in the environment and for the environment as outlined in the Ministry of Education’s policy framework on environmental education, Acting Today, Shaping Tomorrow. They are designed in collaboration with visiting teachers so that it enhances and strengthens the programs that teachers are delivering in their own classrooms. We provide support materials, before and after the Hillside experience, including activities teachers can conduct in their classrooms or schoolyards, and assessment tools for teaching in the outdoor classroom.
